The University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida
Located about 10 miles from metropolitan Pensacola, the University of West Florida is a public university established in 1963. The University of West Florida, also dubbed as UWF and West Florida was founded after a feasibility study asserted the necessity of a university in Northwest Florida. The fund used to build UWF was allocated by the Florida Legislature. The university is the sixth among the 12 universities of higher education in Florida's State University System.
In July 1964, Dr. Harold Crosby took over the presidency over the university. He supervised the construction of the campus and led a lot of firsts for UWF. The undergraduate programs were given accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and School under his office. The John C. Pace Library also opened during his time as well as the charter for the UWF Foundation.
A significant development took place in the university under its president Dr. Morris Marx. He was in the office for 14 years until 2002. Under his leadership, the opening of the Fort Walton Beach location took place. He also initiated the opening of facilities such as student buildings, residence halls, and apartments, and center for learning like the College of Education Complex and the Center for Fine and Performing Arts.

Further, the university receives funding from tuition and state funds. The Board of Trustees with its 13 members heads the university. Six of the board members are appointed by the Governor of Florida, while the Board of Governors, the president of the Student Government and the president of the Faculty Senate designate five of them. There are a total of five Colleges for the undergraduate programs which are the College of Arts, College of Business, Social Science and Humanities, College of Education and Professional Studies, College of Science and Engineering, and College of Health.
Unlike other universities, students are not obligated to live on campus. It has a total enrollment of 13,000 students, 60 percent of which are female. There are over 150 University of West Florida student organizations and clubs to join on campus. There are fraternities and sororities to check out, as well. The students are lucky to have options for outdoor leisure because the campus is located within a wilderness preserve. Students can go water skiing, kayaking, and canoeing around the area. |

The university's athletic team collectively known as the West Florida Argonauts compete in the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference. Both men and women sports include cross country, basketball, baseball, soccer, golf, and tennis. In May 2001, the first NCAA Division II national championship was won by the men's golf team.
In February 2010, the university inaugurates a new science and engineering building. It was funded by the state to advocate better and stronger science, technology, and engineering undergraduate programs. In June 2018, UWF ranks 3rd highest score in the performance-based metrics of the Florida Board of Governors. It was also the university's highest score in its entire history. It first ranked third in April 2017.
